USDA confirms two cases of velogenic Newcastle disease in backyard poultry in California

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) is reminding bird owners about the need for biosecurity after the confirmation two cases of virulent Newcastle disease in two California backyard flocks on May 18 and May 24.. Virulent Newcastle disease has not been found in commercial poultry in the United States since 2003. Federal and State partners are conducting additional surveillance and testing in the area.

A report released by the OIE this morning indicates that presumptive H7N1 low pathogenic avian influenza has been diagnosed in a commercial broiler breeder flock of 24091 birds in Hopkins County, Texas.
